Anas bin Malik was asked about the dyeing of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had only a few grey hairs, but Abu Bakr and Umar after him used to dye their hair with henna and katam."He continued, "Abu Bakr brought his father Abu Quhafa to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of the conquest of Mecca, carrying him until he placed him before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Bakr, "If you had left the old man in his house, we would have come to him, as an honor to Abu Bakr."Then Abu Quhafa accepted Islam, and his beard and head were white like the thaghamah plant. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Change the color of these, but avoid black."
Its isnad is sahih. Hisham is Dastawai, and Muhammad bin Salama Harrani was one of Ahmad's students, and he narrates from him here. Haythami graded it sahih in 5/159, and the hadith was narrated by Ibn Hibban 356, number 1476, and Hakim 3/244, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
