Anas reported that he once saw a silver ring on the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for a single day, so the people had silver rings made for themselves. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw away his ring, and the people threw away their rings as well.
حدثنا أبو كامل حدثنا إبراهيم يعني ابن سعد حدثنا ابن شهاب
أنه أبصر في يد رسول الله ﷺ خاتما من ورق يوما واحدا فصنع الناس خواتيم من ورق قال فطرح رسول الله ﷺ خاتمه وطرح الناس خواتيمهم
Its isnad is sahih. Ibrahim bin Saad here is Ibrahim bin Saad the Zuhri, and this hadith is superseded by the well-known hadith narrated by the leading scholars that the Prophet ﷺ took up a ring of silver and had an inscription engraved on it, and by the hadith that he ﷺ gave permission for the silver ring. The rest of the leading scholars all have this in the Book of Clothing as well, in the chapter on the ring, except Abu Dawud, who has a separate book called "The Ring," with this hadith at its beginning, and Nasai has it in the Book of Adornment.
