Thabit reported,

We were with Anas bin Malik when he wrote a document concerning his family, and he said, "Bear witness, you company of reciters."Thabit said, "I disliked that, so I said, 'Abu Hamza, if only you would call them by their names.'"He replied, "What harm is there in my calling you reciters? Shall I not tell you about your brothers whom we used to call reciters in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"He then mentioned that they were seventy in number. When night fell upon them, they would go to a teacher of theirs in Madinah and study through the night until morning. When morning came, whoever among them had the strength would fetch fresh water and gather firewood, and whoever had means would join the others to buy a sheep and prepare it, which would then be hung up at the chamber of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.When Khubayb was killed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent them out, and they came upon a clan of Banu Sulaym among whom was my maternal uncle Haram. Haram said to their leader, "Let me go and tell these people that we have no quarrel with them, so that they may give us free passage." Affan's version says, "so that they may give us free passage."Haram then said to them, "We have no quarrel with you, so let us pass." But a man met him with a spear and ran it through him. When he felt the spear pierce his belly, he said, "Allah is the greatest! By the Lord of the Kaabah, I have triumphed!"Then they fell upon the rest, and not one of them remained. Anas said, "I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grieve over anything as he grieved over them. I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the morning prayer raise his hands and supplicate against them."Some time later, Abu Talha said to me, "Do you have any interest in the killer of Haram?"I said, "What is the matter with him? May Allah do such and such to him!"He said, "Hold on, for he has accepted Islam."Affan's version says, "He raised his hands supplicating against them," and Abu Nadr's version says, "He raised his hands."
