When this verse was revealed, "Believers, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet... lest your deeds be rendered worthless without your perceiving it" [Hujurat 49:2], Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas, who had a loud voice, said, "I am the one who used to raise my voice above the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. My deeds have come to nothing. I am among the people of the Fire."He sat in his house, grief-stricken. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ noticed his absence, so some of the people went to him and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been asking about you. What is the matter with you?"He replied, "I am the one who raises his voice above the voice of the Prophet and speaks loudly to him. My deeds have been rendered worthless, and I am among the people of the Fire."They went to the Prophet ﷺ and told him what Thabit had said. He replied, "No, rather he is among the people of Paradise."Anas said, "We used to see him walking among us, knowing that he was among the people of Paradise. On the day of Yamamah, when some of us began to give way, Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas came forward, having already perfumed himself with embalming scent and put on his shroud. He said, 'What an evil way to treat your comrades!' Then he fought them until he was killed."
