The Jews, when a woman among them was menstruating, would not eat with her nor share the same home with her. So the companions of the Prophet ﷺ asked about this, and Allah revealed, "They ask you about menstruation. Say, it is harm, so keep away from women during menstruation and do not approach them until they are pure" [Baqarah 2:222], to the end of the verse. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do everything except intercourse."Word of this reached the Jews, who said, "This man does not want to leave any matter of ours without opposing us in it."Usayd bin Hudayr and Abbad bin Bishr came and said, "Messenger of Allah, the Jews have said such and such. Shall we then have intercourse with them?"The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed, until we thought he had become angry with them. They left, and on their way they were met by a gift of milk being brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He sent after them and gave them some to drink, so they knew he was not angry with them.Abdullah said, I heard my father say, Hammad bin Salama would not praise or commend any of his hadith except this one, because of its excellence.
