I prayed the Friday prayer with Anas, and we were pushed up against the pillars, so we either moved forward or stepped back. Anas said, "We used to avoid this during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."
حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي عن سفيان عن يحيى بن هانئ
صليت مع أنس يوم الجمعة فدفعنا إلى السواري فتقدمنا أو تأخرنا فقال أنس كنا نتقي هذا على عهد رسول الله ﷺ
Its isnad is sahih. Yahya bin Hani, Abu Dawud Muradi, is trustworthy, and Abdul-Hameed bin Mahmud Mawali is trustworthy though he narrated little. The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud 1/180 no. 673, in the Book of Prayer, chapter on rows between the pillars, and Tirmidhi 1/443 no. 229 with similar wording, saying it is hasan sahih, and Nasai 2/94 no. 821, in the Book of Leadership in Prayer, with similar wording, and Ibn Majah 1/320 no. 1002.
