When the verses "You will never attain righteousness until you spend from what you love" [Aal Imran 3:92] and "Who is it that will lend to Allah a goodly loan" [Baqarah 2:245] were revealed, Abu Talha said, "Messenger of Allah, my orchard at such-and-such a place, by Allah, if I could give it secretly without announcing it, I would do so."He replied, "Give it to your poor relatives."
حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد عن حميد
لما نزلت {لن تنالوا البر حتى تنفقوا مما تحبون} و {من ذا الذي يقرض الله قرضا حسنا} قال أبو طلحة يا رسول الله وحائطي الذي كان بمكان كذا وكذا والله لو استطعت أن أسرها لم أعلنها قال اجعله في فقراء أهلك
Its isnad is sahih. Bukhari related it 4/7 in "The Book of Wills," in the chapter "Giving charity through one's agent," Abu Dawud in 2/132, no. 1689, in "The Book of Zakat," in the chapter "Maintaining family ties," Nasai in 6/232, no. 3602, in "The Book of Endowments," in the chapter "How an endowment is recorded," and Darimi in 1/477, no. 1655.
