The Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was approached by the tribes of Ril, Zakwan, Usayya, and Banu Lihyan. They claimed that they had embraced Islam and asked him for assistance against their own people. The Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent with them on that day seventy men from the Ansar.Anas said, "We used to call them in their time the Reciters. They would gather firewood by day and pray by night."The men set off with them until they reached the well of Maunah, where they betrayed them and killed them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then performed the qunut for a month during the dawn prayer, supplicating against these tribes, Ril, Zakwan, Usayya, and Banu Lihyan.Qatada said, Anas narrated to us that they used to recite a Quranic verse about them.Ibn Jafar said in his version, "We recited concerning them a Quranic passage, 'Convey to our people on our behalf that we have met our Lord, and He is pleased with us and has pleased us.'" Then this was later withdrawn.Ibn Jafar said, "Then it was abrogated, or withdrawn."
