People complained about Ali. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then stood up to address us, and I heard him say, "People, do not complain about Ali. By Allah, he is indeed stern when it comes to the cause of Allah," or he said, "in the path of Allah."
حدثنا يعقوب حدثنا أبي عن ابن إسحاق قال فحدثني عبد الله بن عبد الرحمن بن معمر بن حزم عن سليمان بن محمد بن كعب بن عجرة عن عمته زينب بنت كعب وكانت عند أبي سعيد الخدري
اشتكى عليا الناس قال فقام رسول الله ﷺ فينا خطيبا فسمعته يقول أيها الناس لا تشكوا عليا فوالله إنه لأخيشن في ذات الله أو في سبيل الله
Its isnad is sahih, and Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman bin Mamar bin Hazm Ansari was the judge of Madinah for Umar bin Abdul-Aziz. Haythami mentioned the hadith in 9/129 and said nothing about it, while Hakim graded it sahih in 3/134, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
