We were sitting waiting for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he came out to us from one of his wives' houses. We stood up and walked with him. Then his sandal strap broke, so Ali stayed behind to mend it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went on, and we went on with him. Then he stopped to wait for Ali, and we stopped with him.He said, "Among you is a man who will fight for the interpretation of this Quran just as I fought for its revelation."We craned our necks, and Abu Bakr and Umar were among us.He said, "No, it is the one mending the sandal."I went to Ali to give him the good news, but he did not even raise his head at it, as though he had already heard it.
حدثنا أبو نعيم حدثنا فطر حدثني إسماعيل بن رجاء قال سمعت أبي يقول سمعت أبا سعيد الخدري يقول كنا جلوسا ننتظر رسول الله ﷺ فذكر الحديث إلا أنه قال فأتيته لأبشره قال فلم يرفع به رأسا كأنه قد سمعه
