When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived, we used to inform him whenever one of us was near death. He would come before the person died, sit with him, ask forgiveness for him, and wait for him to pass away. Sometimes this would detain him for a long stretch of time and become burdensome for him.So we said, "It would be more considerate to the Messenger of Allah if we did not notify him of the dying person until after he had died."After that, whenever someone among us died, we would inform him. He would come to the family, ask forgiveness for the deceased, and pray over him. Then, if he wished to remain for the burial, he would wait for it, and if he wished to leave, he would leave. We continued in this manner for another period. Then we said, "It would be more considerate to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ if we carried our dead to his house, so as not to make him travel out or trouble him." So we did this, and that became the practice.
Its isnad is hasan. In the printed edition it reads, "Saeed bin Ubayd, from Sibaq," which is an error. The correct reading is what I have recorded. See Mustadrak 1/357, where he graded it sahih and Dhahabi agreed with him.
