The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed the people and said, "Allah gave a servant the choice between this world and what is with Him, and that servant chose what is with Allah."Abu Bakr wept at this. We were puzzled by his weeping, since the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was simply reporting about a servant who had been given the choice. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself was the one given the choice, and Abu Bakr was the most knowledgeable of us about this. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "The most generous of people to me with his companionship and his wealth is Abu Bakr. If I were to take any of mankind as an intimate friend other than my Lord, I would have taken Abu Bakr. But the brotherhood of Islam, or its affection, suffices. Let no door remain open into the mosque except the door of Abu Bakr."
