Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, I heard so-and-so and so-and-so praising you generously, mentioning that you gave them two dinars each."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "But by Allah, so-and-so is not like that. I gave him anywhere from ten to a hundred, yet he says no such thing. By Allah, one of you walks away from me with what he asked for tucked under his arm, and it is nothing but fire."Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, then why do you give it to them?"He answered, "What can I do? They refuse anything else, and Allah refuses to let me be stingy."
حدثنا أسود بن عامر حدثنا أبو بكر عن الأعمش عن أبي صالح
قال عمر يا رسول الله لقد سمعت فلانا وفلانا يحسنان الثناء يذكران أنك أعطيتهما دينارين قال فقال النبي ﷺ لكن والله فلانا ما هو كذلك لقد أعطيته من عشرة إلى مائة فما يقول ذاك أما والله إن أحدكم ليخرج مسألته من عندي يتأبطها يعني تكون تحت إبطه يعني نارا قال قال عمر يا رسول الله لم تعطيها إياهم قال فما أصنع يأبون إلا ذاك ويأبى الله لي البخل
Its isnad is sahih. Abu Bakr is Ibn Ayyash Asadi, a trustworthy narrator whose name is disputed, and the most correct view is that his name is his kunya. The hadith has been mentioned before with many different wordings, and with this particular wording it was narrated by Ibn Hibban 216, no. 849 Mawarid, and by Bayhaqi in Shuab 6/519, no. 9128.
