A group of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ companions were on a journey when they passed by one of the Arab encampments and asked for hospitality, but the people refused to host them. As it happened, the chief of that tribe was stricken, either losing his sanity or being stung by a scorpion.His people said to the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Is there anyone among you who can perform a healing recitation?"One of them replied, "Yes."He went to the afflicted man and recited over him the Opening of the Book, and the man recovered. He was given a flock of sheep as payment, but the companion refused to accept it until he had come to the Prophet ﷺ and told him what had happened.He said, "Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth, I recited nothing over him but the Opening of the Book."The Prophet ﷺ laughed and said, "How did you know it was a healing recitation?" Then he said, "Take it, and assign me a share along with you."
حدثنا هشيم حدثنا أبو بشر عن أبي المتوكل
أن ناسا من أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ كانوا في سفر فمروا بحي من أحياء العرب فاستضافوهم فأبوا أن يضيفوهم فعرض لإنسان منهم في عقله أو لدغ قال فقالوا لأصحاب رسول الله ﷺ هل فيكم من راق فقال رجل منهم نعم فأتى صاحبهم فرقاه بفاتحة الكتاب فبرأ فأعطي قطيعا من غنم فأبى أن يقبل حتى أتى النبي ﷺ فذكر ذلك له فقال يا رسول الله والذي بعثك بالحق ما رقيته إلا بفاتحة الكتاب قال فضحك وقال ما يدريك أنها رقية قال ثم قال خذوا واضربوا لي بسهم معكم
Its isnad is sahih. Abu Mutawakkil Naji is Ali bin Dawud, trustworthy, and Abu Bishr is Jafar bin Iyas, as Tirmidhi explicitly states, trustworthy. Bukhari related the hadith in 4/453, no. 2276 (Fath), in the chapter on hiring, on what is given for ruqya, and Tirmidhi in 4/339, no. 2064, in the chapter on medicine, on what has been said about taking payment for charms, and he graded it sahih, from the route of Abu Bishr from Abu Mutawakkil.
