The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delayed the night prayer until much of the night had passed, until about a third of it was gone. Then he went out to the mosque and found people in scattered groups, and they were few in number.He became angrier than I have ever seen him, then he said, "If a man were to call people to a bone with some meat on it or two sheep's hooves, they would come to him for that and would not stay behind. Yet they stay behind from this prayer. I had a mind to order a man to lead the people in prayer, then go around to these houses whose occupants stayed away from this prayer and burn them down on top of them with fire."
حدثنا هاشم حدثنا شيبان عن عاصم عن أبي صالح
أخر رسول الله ﷺ صلاة العشاء حتى تهور الليل فذهب ثلثه أو قرابته ثم خرج إلى المسجد فإذا الناس عزون وإذا هم قليل قال فغضب غضبا ما أعلم أني رأيته غضب غضبا قط أشد منه ثم قال لو أن رجلا دعا الناس إلى عرق أو مرماتين أتوه لذلك ولم يتخلفوا وهم يتخلفون عن هذه الصلاة لقد هممت أن آمر رجلا يصلي بالناس وأتبع هذه الدور التي تخلف أهلوها عن هذه فأضرمها عليهم بالنيران
