"This shall surely be dyed from this," meaning his beard from the blood of his head, "so what is the wretched one waiting for with me?"They said, "Commander of the Faithful, if that happens, tell us, so we may wipe out his clan."He replied, "By Allah, then you would be killing people other than my killer for my sake."They said, "Then appoint a successor over us."He said, "No, but I leave you to what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left you to."They said, "What will you say to your Lord when you come to Him?" — and Waki once said, "when you meet Him."He answered, "I will say, 'O Allah, You left me among them as long as You willed, then You took me to Yourself while You were still among them. If You wish, You will set them right, and if You wish, You will let them go astray.'"
حدثنا وكيع حدثنا الأعمش عن سالم بن أبي الجعد عن عبد الله بن سبع قال سمعت
لتخضبن هذه من هذا فما ينتظر بي الأشقى قالوا يا أمير المؤمنين فأخبرنا به نبير عترته قال إذا تالله تقتلون بي غير قاتلي قالوا فاستخلف علينا قال لا ولكن أترككم إلى ما ترككم إليه رسول الله ﷺ قالوا فما تقول لربك إذا أتيته وقال وكيع مرة إذا لقيته قال أقول اللهم تركتني فيهم ما بدا لك ثم قبضتني إليك وأنت فيهم فإن شئت أصلحتهم وإن شئت أفسدتهم
