I heard Malik bin Anas mention Sufyan Thawri and say, "He parted from me having committed not to drink nabidh."

Its isnad is sahih. This is an athar, and this athar clarifies the view of the hadith scholars regarding nabidh and their disagreement over it, and the jurists likewise disagreed. The nabidh that is disputed is that whose smell has grown strong. As for what is a mere infusion, which is what we do today with dates, raisins, and apricots, that is not disputed.
