Abu Hurairah reported,

By Allah, I used to press my stomach against the ground from sheer hunger, and I used to tie a stone over my belly from hunger.One day I sat by the road they used to take when going out. Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by, and I asked him about a verse from the Book of Allah . I only asked him hoping he would invite me along, but he did not.Then Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by, and I asked him about a verse from the Book of Allah. I only asked him hoping he would invite me along, but he did not.Then Abu Qasim ﷺ passed by. He recognized what was on my face and in my heart, and he said, "Abu Hurayrah."I replied, "At your service, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Come along."I followed, and he gave me permission to enter. Inside he found milk in a bowl, and he asked, "Where did this milk come from?"They answered, "So-and-so," or "the family of so-and-so, sent it as a gift."He said, "Abu Hurayrah."I said, "At your service, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Go to the people of Suffah and call them to me."Now the people of Suffah were the guests of Islam. They had no family to take them in and no property of their own. Whenever a gift came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he would take some for himself and send the rest to them.This troubled me. I had been hoping to get a drink of that milk to give me strength for the rest of my day and night. I thought, "I am the messenger to them, so when they arrive, I will be the one handing it out. What will be left for me from this milk?" But there was no avoiding obedience to Allah and His Messenger.So I went and called them, and they came. They asked permission to enter, and he granted it, and they took their seats in the room.Then he said, "Abu Hurr, take it and serve them."I took the bowl and began handing it to them. Each man would take the bowl and drink until satisfied, then return it. I would pass it to the next, and he would drink until satisfied, then return it, until I came to the last of them.Then I handed it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He took the bowl, held it in his hand, and there was still a little left in it. He raised his head, looked at me, smiled, and said, "Abu Hurr."I said, "At your service, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Only you and I are left."I said, "You have spoken the truth, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Sit down and drink."So I sat and drank. Then he said to me, "Drink." So I drank. He kept saying, "Drink," and I kept drinking, until I said, "No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I cannot find any way for it to go down."He said, "Hand me the bowl."I returned the bowl to him, and he drank what remained.

حدثنا روح حدثنا عمر بن ذر عن مجاهد أن

أبا هريرة كان يقول

والله إن كنت لأعتمد بكبدي على الأرض من الجوع وإن كنت لأشد الحجر على بطني من الجوع ولقد قعدت يوما على طريقهم الذي يخرجون منه فمر أبو بكر رضي الله تعالى عنه فسألته عن آية من كتاب الله عز وجل ما سألته إلا ليستتبعني فلم يفعل فمر عمر رضي الله تعالى عنه فسألته عن آية من كتاب الله ما سألته إلا ليستتبعني فلم يفعل فمر أبو القاسم ﷺ فعرف ما في وجهي وما في نفسي فقال أبا هريرة فقلت له لبيك يا رسول الله فقال الحق واستأذنت فأذن لي فوجدت لبنا في قدح فقال من أين لكم هذا اللبن فقالوا أهداه لنا فلان أو آل فلان قال أبا هريرة قلت لبيك يا رسول الله قال انطلق إلى أهل الصفة فادعهم لي قال وأهل الصفة أضياف الإسلام لم يأووا إلى أهل ولا مال إذا جاءت رسول الله ﷺ هدية أصاب منها وبعث إليهم منها قال وأحزنني ذلك وكنت أرجو أن أصيب من اللبن شربة أتقوى بها بقية يومي وليلتي فقلت أنا الرسول فإذا جاء القوم كنت أنا الذي أعطيهم فقلت ما يبقى لي من هذا اللبن ولم يكن من طاعة الله وطاعة رسوله بد فانطلقت فدعوتهم فأقبلوا فاستأذنوا فأذن لهم فأخذوا مجالسهم من البيت ثم قال أبا هر خذ فأعطهم فأخذت القدح فجعلت أعطيهم فيأخذ الرجل القدح فيشرب حتى يروى ثم يرد القدح فأعطيه الآخر فيشرب حتى يروى ثم يرد القدح حتى أتيت على آخرهم ودفعت إلى رسول الله ﷺ فأخذ القدح فوضعه في يده وبقي فيه فضلة ثم رفع رأسه فنظر إلي وتبسم فقال أبا هر قلت لبيك يا رسول الله قال بقيت أنا وأنت فقلت صدقت يا رسول الله قال فاقعد فاشرب قال فقعدت فشربت ثم قال لي اشرب فشربت فما زال يقول لي اشرب فأشرب حتى قلت لا والذي بعثك بالحق ما أجد لها في مسلكا قال ناولني القدح فرددت إليه القدح فشرب من الفضلة
