Some people in Yemen dug a pit to trap a lion. The lion fell into it, and as the people crowded around to look, one of them fell in. He grabbed onto another to save himself, that one grabbed onto a third, and the third grabbed onto a fourth, until all four had fallen into the pit. The lion mauled them, and a dispute broke out among their families until they took up weapons against one another.Ali said to them, "Will you kill two hundred men over the deaths of four? Let me judge between you with a ruling, and if you accept it, well and good. The first man receives a quarter of the full blood-money, the second receives a third, the third receives a half, and the fourth receives the full blood-money."But they were not satisfied with his judgment, so they went to the Prophet ﷺ. He said, "I will judge between you."He was then informed of Ali's
ruling, and he upheld it.
