The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Keep the prayer brief, for among the worshippers are the weak, the elderly, and those with pressing needs."
حدثنا وكيع قال حدثنا الأعمش عن أبي صالح
قال رسول الله ﷺ تجوزوا في الصلاة فإن فيهم الضعيف والكبير وذا الحاجة
Its isnad is sahih. The hadith is found in Bukhari 2/198 no. 702, in the chapter on adhan, lightening the prayer for the imam, from Fath al-Bari, and Muslim 1/341 no. 467, and Tirmidhi 1/463 no. 469, and Nasai 2/94 no. 823.Many who prolong the prayer in our times argue by citing the leadership in prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, since it has already been established that he used to shorten it. They are unaware that the principles require giving precedence to speech over action, since speech is specific to him alone. Nothing could be sweeter than praying behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, yet he commanded lightening the prayer and rebuked Muaz for prolonging it.
