It was narrated from the Prophet ﷺ that he said, "The imam is appointed only to be followed," with this report adding, "and when he recites, listen attentively."
[Sahih] Narrated by Nasai, in the Book of the Opening, Chapter on the interpretation of Allah's saying, "And when the Quran is recited..." etc., no. 922, and Ibn Majah, no. 846, from the hadith of Abu Khalid Ahmar, with this wording, and Imam Muslim declared it sahih in his Sahih (see the following hadith, no. 973). This hadith is abrogated, as shown by the ruling of Abu Hurairah that Surah Fatihah should be recited in the loud prayers, after the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It was narrated by Humaydi (980, in my edition), and its basis is found in Sahih Muslim, as will come, no. 821.
