He went to the Prophet ﷺ regarding his father's debt. He said, "I knocked on the door, and the Prophet asked, 'Who is this?'I replied, 'It is I.'He said, 'I, I,' as if he disliked it."
حدثنا مسدد حدثنا بشر عن شعبة عن محمد بن المنكدر
أنه ذهب إلى النبي ﷺ في دين أبيه فدققت الباب فقال من هذا قلت أنا قال أنا أنا كأنه كرهه
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Seeking Permission, chapter "When He Said, 'Who is this?' and the Man Said, 'It is I'," no. 6250, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Manners, chapter "The Dislike of the One Seeking Permission Saying 'It is I' When Asked 'Who is this?'," no. 2155, both from the hadith of Shubah with this wording.
