It reached him that whenever the Prophet ﷺ saw the new crescent, he would say, "A crescent of goodness and right guidance, a crescent of goodness and right guidance, a crescent of goodness and right guidance. I believe in the One who created you," three times. Then he would say, "Praise be to Allah, who has taken away such-and-such month and brought such-and-such month."

[Its chain of transmission is daif] It was narrated by Ibn Abu Shayba, 10/400, and Abdul-Razzaq, 169/4, hadith no. 7353, 400, from the hadith of Qatada through this route, and the chain is mursal. It is found in Maraseel of Abu Dawud, hadith no. 527, where he said, "It has been narrated as connected, but that is not sound."
