We were with Salim bin Ubayd when a man from the group sneezed and said, "Peace be upon you."Salim replied, "And upon you and upon your mother."Later he said, "Perhaps you took offense at what I said to you?"The man answered, "I would have preferred that you not mention my mother, neither for good nor for ill."Salim said, "I only said to you what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said. We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man from the group sneezed and said, 'Peace be upon you.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, 'And upon you and upon your mother.' Then he said, 'When one of you sneezes, let him praise Allah.'" He mentioned some forms of praise. "And let the one beside him say, 'May Allah have mercy on you,' and let him respond to them, 'May Allah forgive us and you.'"

Chapter of commentaryIts isnad is daif. Tirmidhi narrated it in the Book of Manners, in the chapter on how one should respond to a sneezer, no. 2740, from the hadith of Mansour, narrated in this manner. Hilal did not meet Salim bin Ubayd, there is an unknown man between them. See Mustadrak 4/267 and Musnad Ahmad 6/7,8, no. 24354. It is stated explicitly that Hilal heard from Salim, but this is a mistake on the part of Jareer bin Abdul-Hameed, may Allah have mercy on him.
