Abu Hurairah reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is better for one of you to have his belly filled with pus than to have it filled with poetry."Abu Ali said, It has reached me from Abu Ubayd that he said, The meaning of this is that his heart becomes so filled with poetry that it distracts him from the Quran and the remembrance of Allah. But if the Quran and knowledge are predominant, then in our view such a person's belly is not considered filled with poetry."Indeed, some eloquence is sorcery."He said, The meaning seems to be that a person reaches such a level in his eloquence that he praises someone and is believed in his praise, turning hearts toward his words, then he disparages that same person and is believed in his disparagement, turning hearts toward his latter statement. It is as though he has bewitched his listeners by this.

حدثنا أبو الوليد الطيالسي حدثنا شعبة عن الأعمش عن أبي صالح

عن أبي هريرة قال

قال رسول الله ﷺ لأن يمتلئ جوف أحدكم قيحا خير له من أن يمتلئ شعرا قال أبو علي بلغني عن أبي عبيد أنه قال وجهه أن يمتلئ قلبه حتى يشغله عن القرآن وذكر الله فإذا كان القرآن والعلم الغالب فليس جوف هذا عندنا ممتلئا من الشعر وإن من البيان لسحرا قال كأن المعنى أن يبلغ من بيانه أن يمدح الإنسان فيصدق فيه حتى يصرف القلوب إلى قوله ثم يذمه فيصدق فيه حتى يصرف القلوب إلى قوله الآخر فكأنه سحر السامعين بذلك
