Sahl bin Abu Umama reported,

He and his father visited Anas bin Malik in Madinah during the time of Umar bin Abdul-Aziz, when Umar was governor of Madinah. They found Anas performing a prayer that was light and brief, almost like the prayer of a traveler, or close to it. When he had given the closing salam, my father said, "May Allah have mercy on you. Tell me, was this the obligatory prayer, or something extra that you were offering voluntarily?"Anas replied, "It was the obligatory prayer, and it was the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I left out nothing except something I forgot."Then he said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say, 'Do not be harsh with yourselves, or harshness will be imposed upon you. A people were harsh with themselves, so Allah was harsh with them, and those are their remnants in the hermitages and the cloisters.' 'And monasticism which they invented, We did not prescribe it for them' [Hadid 57:27]."Then the next morning he came out and said, "Will you not ride out with me, so that you may see and take heed?"I said, "Yes."So they all rode out, and they came upon dwellings whose people had vanished, had passed away and were gone, in ruins upon their foundations.Anas asked, "Do you know these dwellings?"I said, "How well I know them and their people."He said, "These are the dwellings of a people destroyed by transgression and envy. Envy extinguishes the light of good deeds, and transgression either confirms it or belies it. The eye commits fornication, and the hand, and the foot, and the body, and the tongue, and the private part either confirms it or belies it."
