The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Among the greatest of major sins is a person's wrongful attack upon the honor of a Muslim man, and among the major sins is responding to one insult with two."

[Its chain of transmission is daif] Ibn Hajar graded it hasan in Fath al-Bari*: 10/411. It has been reported from Ahmad that he said about Amr bin Abu Salama Tinnisi, "He narrated absurd hadiths from Zuhayr" (Tahzib).
