A man sought permission to enter upon the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, "What a wretched member of his clan," or "What a wretched man of his clan." Then he said, "Let him in." When the man entered, the Prophet ﷺ spoke gently to him.Ayesha said, "Messenger of Allah, you spoke gently to him after saying about him what you said?"He replied, "The worst of people in standing before Allah on the Day of Resurrection is the one whom people abandon, or leave alone, to avoid his vulgarity."
حدثنا مسدد حدثنا سفيان عن ابن المنكدر عن عروة
استأذن رجل على النبي ﷺ فقال بئس ابن العشيرة أو بئس رجل العشيرة ثم قال ائذنوا له فلما دخل ألان له القول فقالت عائشة يا رسول الله ألنت له القول وقد قلت له ما قلت قال إن شر الناس عند الله منزلة يوم القيامة من ودعه أو تركه الناس لاتقاء فحشه
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Manners, the chapter on what is permissible of speaking ill of people known for corruption and suspicion, hadith no. 6054, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Righteousness and Family Ties, the chapter on dealing gently with one whose foul conduct is feared, hadith no. 2591, both from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna, and it is also found in his own collection (juz), hadith no. 2.
