The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was never given a choice between two matters except that he chose the easier of the two, as long as it was not sinful. If it was sinful, he was the furthest of people from it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never took revenge for his own sake, but if the sanctity of Allah the Exalted was violated, he would take revenge for the sake of Allah.
حدثنا عبد الله بن مسلمة عن مالك عن ابن شهاب عن عروة بن الزبير
ما خير رسول الله ﷺ في أمرين إلا اختار أيسرهما ما لم يكن إثما فإن كان إثما كان أبعد الناس منه وما انتقم رسول الله ﷺ لنفسه إلا أن تنتهك حرمة الله تعالى فينتقم لله بها
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Good Manners, in the chapter on the saying of the Prophet ﷺ, "Make things easy and do not make things difficult," no. 6126, from Abdullah bin Maslama Qanabi. Muslim narrated it in the Book of Virtues, in the chapter on Allah's keeping him away from sins and his choosing the easiest of what is permissible, and so on, no. 2327, through the hadith of Malik with the same wording. It is also found in the Muwatta (Yahya's recension), 2/902, 902–903.
