Bara bin Azib reported,

We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the funeral of a man from the Ansar. We reached the grave before the side-niche had been dug, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down and we sat around him as still as if birds were perched on our heads. In his hand was a stick with which he was scratching the ground. Then he raised his head and said, "Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave," twice or three times. In Jareer's version there is added here, "And indeed he hears the sound of their sandals when they turn away, at the moment he is asked, 'You there, who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?'"Hannad said in his version, "Two angels come to him and make him sit up. They say to him, 'Who is your Lord?' He answers, 'My Lord is Allah.' They ask him, 'What is your religion?' He answers, 'My religion is Islam.' They ask him, 'Who is this man who was sent among you?' He says, 'He is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' They ask, 'And how do you know?' He replies, 'I read the Book of Allah, believed in it, and affirmed its truth.'"Jareer's version adds, "That is the meaning of the words of Allah عز وجل, 'Allah keeps firm those who believe' [Ibrahim 14:27]." Then both versions agree. He said, "A caller will then call out from the sky, 'My servant has spoken the truth, so spread out for him a furnishing from Paradise, open for him a door to Paradise, and clothe him with garments from Paradise.' Then some of its breeze and fragrance comes to him, and his grave is widened for him as far as his eye can see."He continued, "As for the disbeliever," and he mentioned his death, "his soul is returned to his body and two angels come to him and make him sit up. They say to him, 'Who is your Lord?' He stammers, 'Ah, ah, ah, I do not know.' They ask, 'What is your religion?' He stammers, 'Ah, ah, I do not know.' They ask, 'Who is this man who was sent among you?' He stammers, 'Ah, ah, I do not know.' Then a caller calls out from the sky, 'He has lied, so spread out for him a furnishing from the Fire, clothe him with garments from the Fire, and open for him a door to the Fire.' Then some of its heat and scorching wind reach him, and his grave is constricted upon him until his ribs are crushed into one another."Jareer's version adds, "Then a blind, mute creature is set upon him carrying an iron mallet so heavy that if it were struck against a mountain, the mountain would turn to dust. He strikes him with it a single blow that is heard by everything between the east and the west except humans and jinn, and he turns to dust. Then the soul is returned to him."
