I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Were it not that I would impose hardship on my community, I would have commanded them to use the siwak before every prayer."Abu Salama said, "I used to see Zayd sitting in the mosque with the siwak tucked behind his ear the way a scribe tucks his pen, and whenever he rose to pray, he would brush his teeth with it."

سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول لولا أن أشق على أمتي لأمرتهم بالسواك عند كل صلاة قال أبو سلمة فرأيت زيدا يجلس في المسجد وإن السواك من أذنه موضع القلم من أذن الكاتب فكلما قام إلى الصلاة استاك
[Hasan] Tirmidhi narrated it, Purification, chapter on what has been said about the tooth-stick, no. 23, from the hadith of Muhammad bin Ishaq with this wording, and he said, hasan sahih, and Baghawi graded it sahih in Sharh al-Sunnah, 198.
