Awf reported,

I heard Hajjaj delivering a sermon in which he said, "The likeness of Uthman before Allah is like the likeness of Isa son of Maryam." Then he recited this verse, reciting it and interpreting it, "When Allah said, 'Isa, I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify you from those who disbelieved'" [Aal Imran 3:55], gesturing with his hand toward us and toward the people of Sham.

عن عوف قال

سمعت الحجاج يخطب وهو يقول إن مثل عثمان عند الله كمثل عيسى ابن مريم ثم قرأ هذه الآية يقرؤها ويفسرها {إذ قال الله يا عيسى إني متوفيك ورافعك إلي ومطهرك من الذين كفروا} يشير إلينا بيده وإلى أهل الشام
