Ibn Shihab reported,

Abu Idris al-Khawlani Aaiz Allah reported that Yazid bin Umayra, who was among the companions of Muaz bin Jabal, told him the following.He said, Muaz never sat down in a gathering of remembrance without saying, "Allah is a just judge. Those who doubt are destroyed."One day, Muaz bin Jabal said, "Ahead of you lie trials in which wealth will become abundant and the Quran will be opened up so that the believer, the hypocrite, the man, the woman, the young, the old, the slave, and the free will all take it up. Soon a man may say, 'Why do people not follow me when I have read the Quran? They will not follow me until I invent something other than it for them.' So beware of what he invents, for what he invents is misguidance.And I warn you of the slip of the wise man, for Satan may speak a word of misguidance through the tongue of a wise man, and a hypocrite may sometimes speak a word of truth."Yazid said, I asked Muaz, "How am I to know, may Allah have mercy on you, that a wise man may speak a word of misguidance and that a hypocrite may speak a word of truth?"He replied, "Yes. Avoid from the speech of the wise man those notorious sayings about which it is said, 'What is this?' But do not let that turn you away from him, for he may yet retract them. And accept the truth when you hear it, for upon the truth there is a light."

أن أبا إدريس الخولاني عائذ الله أخبره أن يزيد بن عميرة وكان من أصحاب معاذ بن جبل أخبره قال كان لا يجلس مجلسا للذكر حين يجلس إلا قال الله حكم قسط هلك المرتابون فقال معاذ بن جبل يوما إن من ورائكم فتنا يكثر فيها المال ويفتح فيها القرآن حتى يأخذه المؤمن والمنافق والرجل والمرأة والصغير والكبير والعبد والحر فيوشك قائل أن يقول ما للناس لا يتبعوني وقد قرأت القرآن ما هم بمتبعي حتى أبتدع لهم غيره فإياكم وما ابتدع فإن ما ابتدع ضلالة وأحذركم زيغة الحكيم فإن الشيطان قد يقول كلمة الضلالة على لسان الحكيم وقد يقول المنافق كلمة الحق قال قلت لمعاذ ما يدريني رحمك الله أن الحكيم قد يقول كلمة الضلالة وأن المنافق قد يقول كلمة الحق قال بلى اجتنب من كلام الحكيم المشتهرات التي يقال لها ما هذه ولا يثنينك ذلك عنه فإنه لعله أن يراجع وتلق الحق إذا سمعته فإن على الحق نورا
