The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to accept gifts but would not eat from charity.Wahb bin Baqiyya narrated to us in another place, from Khalid, from Muhammad bin Amr, from Abu Salama, without mentioning Abu Hurayra, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to accept gifts but would not eat from charity. He added that a Jewish woman at Khaybar presented him with a roasted sheep that she had poisoned. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ate from it, and the people ate as well. Then he said, "Lift your hands, for she has just informed me that it is poisoned."Bishr bin Bara bin Marur al-Ansari died as a result. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for the Jewish woman and asked her, "What led you to do what you have done?"She replied, "If you were a prophet, what I did would not harm you, and if you were a king, I would have rid the people of you."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then ordered that she be put to death, and she was killed.Later, during the illness from which he passed away, he said, "I have never ceased to feel the effect of the morsel I ate at Khaybar. This is the time it has severed my aorta."
