The Quraysh were deeply concerned about the case of the Makhzumi woman who had stolen. They said, "Who will speak to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about her?"Others replied, "Who would dare to do so except Usama bin Zayd, the beloved of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"So Usama spoke to him about the matter. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Usama, are you interceding regarding one of the prescribed punishments of Allah?"Then he stood up and addressed the people, saying, "Those who came before you were destroyed because whenever a noble person among them stole, they would let him go, but whenever a weak person among them stole, they would carry out the punishment on him. By Allah, if Fatimah the daughter of Muhammad were to steal, I would cut off her hand."
Bukhari reported it in "The Virtues of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ," chapter on the mention of Usama bin Zayd , hadith 3732, and Muslim, "The Prescribed Punishments," chapter on cutting the hand of a noble thief or anyone else, and the prohibition of interceding regarding the prescribed punishments, hadith 1688, from Qutayba, both in abridged and fuller forms.
