When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cut off the hands of those who had stolen his milk-camels and branded their eyes with fire, Allah Almighty reproached him for that, and Allah Almighty revealed "The recompense of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive to spread corruption in the land is that they be killed or crucified" [Maidah 5:33].
حدثنا أحمد بن عمرو بن السرح أخبرنا ابن وهب أخبرني الليث بن سعد عن محمد بن عجلان
أن رسول الله ﷺ لما قطع الذين سرقوا لقاحه وسمل أعينهم بالنار عاتبه الله تعالى في ذلك فأنزل الله تعالى {إنما جزاء الذين يحاربون الله ورسوله ويسعون في الأرض فسادا أن يقتلوا أو يصلبوا} الآية
Its isnad is daif. Nasai narrated it in the chapter Prohibition of Blood, the section mentioning the disagreement between Talha bin Musarrif and Muawiya bin Salih... etc, hadith no. 4047, from Ibn Sarh, through this route. Muhammad bin Ajlan narrated it using "an", and the chain is mursal.
