Regarding this account concerning the verse "And those who do not call upon another god alongside Allah" [Furqan 25:68], he said this refers to the people of polytheism. Then was revealed the verse "My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of Allah's mercy" [Zumar 39:53].

Muslim narrated it in the Book of Iman, chapter titled "Islam Erases What Came Before It, as Does Migration and Hajj," hadith no. 122, from the hadith of Hajjaj bin Muhammad. Bukhari narrated it in the tafsir of Surah Zumar, chapter titled "His Saying, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves...'" etc., hadith no. 4810, from the hadith of Ibn Jurayj, with the same wording.
