A man came to the Prophet ﷺ wearing a ring made of brass.The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Why do I detect from you the smell of idols?"So he threw it away. Then he came back wearing a ring made of iron.The Prophet ﷺ said, "Why do I see on you the jewelry of the people of the Fire?"So he threw it away and asked, "Messenger of Allah, what should I make it from?"He replied, "Make it from silver, but do not let it reach a mithqal in weight."Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Muslim did not mention this, nor did al-Hasan al-Sulami al-Marwazi.
حدثنا الحسن بن علي ومحمد بن عبد العزيز بن أبي رزمة المعنى أن زيد بن حباب أخبرهم عن عبد الله بن مسلم السلمي المروزي أبي طيبة
أن رجلا جاء إلى النبي ﷺ وعليه خاتم من شبه فقال له ما لي أجد منك ريح الأصنام فطرحه ثم جاء وعليه خاتم من حديد فقال ما لي أرى عليك حلية أهل النار فطرحه فقال يا رسول الله من أي شيء أتخذه قال اتخذه من ورق ولا تتمه مثقالا ولم يقل محمد عبد الله بن مسلم ولم يقل الحسن السلمي المروزي
[Hasan] Tirmidhi transmitted it in the chapter on clothing, section on what has been said about the iron ring, hadith 1785, from the hadith of Zayd bin Hubab, by this route, and he said, "Gharib." Nasai also narrated it, hadith 5198, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, hadith 1467, and Hafiz discussed it in Fath al-Bari. Abdullah bin Muslim's hadith is hasan according to the more correct view.
