A man from among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ traveled to Fadala bin Ubayd while he was in Egypt. When he arrived, he said, "I have not come to visit you. Rather, you and I both heard a hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I hoped you might have some knowledge of it."Fadala asked, "What is it?"The man mentioned the hadith.Then he said, "Why do I see you so unkempt, when you are the governor of this land?"Fadala replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to forbid us from much indulgence in luxury."The man asked, "And why do I see you wearing no shoes?"He answered, "The Prophet ﷺ used to command us to go barefoot at times."
حدثنا الحسن بن علي حدثنا يزيد بن هارون أخبرنا الجريري
أن رجلا من أصحاب النبي ﷺ رحل إلى فضالة بن عبيد وهو بمصر فقدم عليه فقال أما إني لم آتك زائرا ولكني سمعت أنا وأنت حديثا من رسول الله ﷺ رجوت أن يكون عندك منه علم قال وما هو قال كذا وكذا قال فما لي أراك شعثا وأنت أمير الأرض قال إن رسول الله ﷺ كان ينهانا عن كثير من الإرفاه قال فما لي لا أرى عليك حذاء قال كان النبي ﷺ يأمرنا أن نحتفي أحيانا
[Its chain is daif] Ahmad narrated it, 6/22, from Yazid bin Harun, with the same wording. Bayhaqi narrated it in Shuab al-Iman, no. 6468, from the hadith of Abu Dawud, and Nasai, no. 5241, from the hadith of Jareeri, with the same wording.Yazid heard from Jareeri after he had become confused, and the hadith of Nasai, 8/185, no. 5241, is sufficient in place of it.
