We came to Wathila bin Asqa and said to him, "Narrate to us a hadith with no addition or omission."He became angry and said, "One of you recites while his own copy of the Quran hangs in his house, yet he still adds and omits."We said, "We only meant a hadith that you heard from the Prophet ﷺ."He said, "We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning a companion of ours who had made the Fire binding upon himself by committing murder. He said, 'Free a slave on his behalf, and Allah will free, for every limb of the slave, a corresponding limb of his from the Fire.'"
[Its isnad is hasan] Ahmad narrated it in 3/490 from the hadith of Damra, and Nasai in Al-Kubra, no. 4891, from the hadith of Ibrahim bin Abu Abla, through the same route. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, no. 1206, and Hakim did as well, according to the standard of the two Shaykhs, 2/212, and Dhahabi agreed with him.Gharif, his hadith is hasan according to the preferred view. 2/212
