A man asked the Prophet ﷺ about the times of prayer, but the Prophet ﷺ gave him no answer. Instead, he instructed Bilal to call the iqamah for the dawn prayer just as dawn broke, and he prayed at a time when a man could barely recognize the face of his companion, or when a man could not recognize the person beside him. Then he instructed Bilal to call the iqamah for the noon prayer when the sun had passed its zenith, though one might still say it was midday, and Allah knows best. Then he instructed Bilal to call the iqamah for the afternoon prayer while the sun was still white and high. Then he instructed Bilal to call the iqamah for the sunset prayer when the sun had set. Then he instructed Bilal to call the iqamah for the night prayer when the twilight had disappeared. The next day, he prayed the dawn prayer and finished it, so that we said, "Has the sun risen?"Then he had the iqamah called for the noon prayer at the time when the afternoon prayer had been performed the previous day. He prayed the afternoon prayer when the sun had turned yellow, or he said when evening had begun. He prayed the sunset prayer before the twilight disappeared, and he prayed the night prayer until a third of the night had passed. Then he asked, "Where is the one who was asking about the times of prayer? The time is between these two."
Muslim also narrated it, in the Book of Mosques, Chapter on the Times of the Five Prayers, no. 614, from the hadith of Badr bin Uthman, with this same wording. The narration of Sulayman bin Musa was reported by Nasai, 1/251, 252, no. 505, and its chain is hasan.
