Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell ill, he would recite the Muawwidhat over himself and blow gently. When his pain grew severe, I would recite them over him and wipe him with his own hand, hoping for its blessing.
حدثنا القعنبي عن مالك عن ابن شهاب عن عروة
أن رسول الله ﷺ كان إذا اشتكى يقرأ في نفسه بالمعوذات وينفث فلما اشتد وجعه كنت أقرأ عليه وأمسح عليه بيده رجاء بركتها
It was narrated by Bukhari in the Virtues of the Quran, chapter on the virtue of Muawwidhat, hadith no. 5016, and by Muslim, in the Book of Greetings, chapter on treating the sick with Muawwidhat and blowing (nafth), hadith no. 2192, from the hadith of Malik through this route, and it is found in Muwatta (Yahya): 2/942, 943.
