I had eaten garlic, then came to the prayer place of the Prophet ﷺ, by which time one rakah had already been performed. When I entered the mosque, the Prophet ﷺ caught the smell of garlic. After the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his prayer, he said, "Whoever has eaten from this plant should not come near us until its smell is gone."When the prayer ended, I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, by Allah, you must give me your hand."I then placed his hand inside the sleeve of my shirt and brought it to my chest, and he found my chest tightly bound. He said, "You have a valid excuse."
[Its chain of transmission is sahih]Ahmad narrated it, 4/249, from the hadith of Abu Hilal, and Sulayman bin Mughira followed him in narrating it, in the same source, 4/252. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, no. 1672, as did Ibn Hibban, no. 319.
