I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the hyena, and he said, "It is game, and a ram is to be paid for it when a pilgrim in the state of ihram hunts it."
حدثنا محمد بن عبد الله الخزاعي حدثنا جرير بن حازم عن عبد الله بن عبيد عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي عمار
سألت رسول الله ﷺ عن الضبع فقال هو صيد ويجعل فيه كبش إذا صاده المحرم
Its isnad is sahih. Tirmidhi narrated it in Hajj, chapter on what has been said about the hyena caught by one in ihram, no. 851 and no. 1791, from the hadith of Abdullah bin Ubayd bin Umayr with this wording, and he said, hasan sahih. Nasai related it, no. 2839, and Ibn Majah, no. 3236. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, no. 2645, 2646, and Ibn Hibban, no. 979, 1068, and Ibn Jarud, no. 438, 439, and Hakim, 1/452, according to the criterion of the two Shaykhs.
