Umar bin Khattab reported,

When the prohibition of wine was being revealed, Umar prayed, "Allah, make the matter of wine clear to us with a clarification that settles it."Then the verse in Baqarah was revealed, "They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, in both there is great sin" [Baqarah 2:219].Umar was called and the verse was recited to him, but he said, "Allah, make the matter of wine clear to us with a clarification that settles it."Then the verse in Nisa was revealed, "You who believe, do not approach the prayer while you are intoxicated" [Nisa 4:43]. So whenever the prayer was called, the announcer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would proclaim that no one who was intoxicated should come near the prayer.Umar was called and the verse was recited to him, but he said, "Allah, make the matter of wine clear to us with a clarification that settles it."Then this verse was revealed, "So will you not desist?" [Maidah 5:91].Umar said, "We have desisted."
