Kaab bin Malik demanded repayment of a debt owed to him by Ibn Abu Hadrad during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Their voices grew loud inside the mosque, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard them from his house. He came out to them, drawing back the curtain of his chamber, and called out to Kaab bin Malik.He said, "Kaab."Kaab replied, "At your service, Messenger of Allah."The Prophet gestured to him with his hand to forgive half of the debt.Kaab said, "I have done so, Messenger of Allah."The Prophet ﷺ then said to Ibn Abu Hadrad, "Get up and pay him."
حدثنا أحمد بن صالح حدثنا ابن وهب أخبرني يونس عن ابن شهاب أخبرني عبد الله بن كعب بن مالك أن
أنه تقاضى ابن أبي حدرد دينا كان عليه في عهد رسول الله ﷺ في المسجد فارتفعت أصواتهما حتى سمعهما رسول الله ﷺ وهو في بيته فخرج إليهما رسول الله ﷺ حتى كشف سجف حجرته ونادى كعب بن مالك فقال يا كعب فقال لبيك يا رسول الله فأشار له بيده أن ضع الشطر من دينك قال كعب قد فعلت يا رسول الله قال النبي ﷺ قم فاقضه
Bukhari reported it in the Book of Prayer, Chapter on Raising the Voice in the Masjid, no. 471, from Ahmad bin Salih, and Muslim reported it in the Book of Musaqah, Chapter on the Desirability of Reducing a Debt, no. 1558, from the hadith of Ibn Wahb, with the same wording.
