I used to sell camels at al-Baqee. I would sell for dinars and take dirhams in their place, and I would sell for dirhams and take dinars in their place, accepting these in exchange for those and giving those in exchange for these.So I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was at the house of Hafsah and said, "Messenger of Allah, wait a moment, I want to ask you something. I sell camels at al-Baqee. I sell for dinars and take dirhams, and I sell for dirhams and take dinars, accepting these in place of those and giving those in place of these."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "There is no harm in taking them at the day's exchange rate, so long as you do not part while anything still remains outstanding between you."
حدثنا موسى بن إسمعيل ومحمد بن محبوب المعنى واحد قالا حدثنا حماد عن سماك بن حرب عن سعيد بن جبير
كنت أبيع الإبل بالبقيع فأبيع بالدنانير وآخذ الدراهم وأبيع بالدراهم وآخذ الدنانير آخذ هذه من هذه وأعطي هذه من هذه فأتيت رسول الله ﷺ وهو في بيت حفصة فقلت يا رسول الله رويدك أسألك إني أبيع الإبل بالبقيع فأبيع بالدنانير وآخذ الدراهم وأبيع بالدراهم وآخذ الدنانير آخذ هذه من هذه وأعطي هذه من هذه فقال رسول الله ﷺ لا بأس أن تأخذها بسعر يومها ما لم تفترقا وبينكما شيء
[Its isnad is hasan] Reported by Tirmidhi, Buyu, chapter on what has been said about currency exchange, no. 1242, and Nasai, no. 4586, from the hadith of Hammad bin Salama, with the same wording. Ibn Majah reported it, no. 2262, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, no. 1128, as did Ibn Jarud, no. 655, and Hakim, 2/44, saying it meets the standard of Muslim, and Dhahabi agreed with him.Shuba also reported it from Simak, with the same wording.
