In the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we used to be called brokers. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by us and gave us a better name than that. He said, "People of trade, buying and selling is attended by idle talk and swearing of oaths, so mix it with charity."
حدثنا مسدد حدثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن أبي وائل
كنا في عهد رسول الله ﷺ نسمى السماسرة فمر بنا رسول الله ﷺ فسمانا باسم هو أحسن منه فقال يا معشر التجار إن البيع يحضره اللغو والحلف فشوبوه بالصدقة
[Sahih] Reported by Ibn Majah, Trade, chapter on caution in trade, no. 2145, from the hadith of Abu Muawiya Dareer with this wording. Nasai also reported it, no. 3828, 3829, as did Tirmidhi, no. 1208, who said, hasan sahih. Ibn Jarud graded it sahih, no. 557, as did Hakim, 5/2, and Dhahabi agreed with him.Amash stated explicitly that he heard it directly, according to Tahawi in Mushkil Athar, 13/3, 14, and a group of narrators followed him in this.
