I asked the Prophet ﷺ about tayammum, and he instructed me to perform a single strike for both the face and the hands.
حدثنا محمد بن المنهال حدثنا يزيد بن زريع عن سعيد عن قتادة عن عزرة عن سعيد بن عبد الرحمن بن أبزى عن أبيه
سألت النبي ﷺ عن التيمم فأمرني ضربة واحدة للوجه والكفين
[Hasan] Reported by Tirmidhi, chapter on Purification, section on what has been said regarding tayammum, no. 144, from the hadith of Yazid bin Zuray, with this wording, and he said, hasan sahih. Darimi also graded it sahih (1/156), as did Ibn Khuzayma (no. 267), Ibn Hibban in Al-Ihsan (no. 1300), and Ibn Jarud (no. 126). Ibn Hibban added that Qatada used to issue rulings based on it.
