Jabir bin Abdullah reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who will deal with Kaab bin al-Ashraf, for he has harmed Allah and His Messenger?"Muhammad bin Maslama stood up and said, "I will, Messenger of Allah. Would you like me to kill him?"He said, "Yes."Muhammad said, "Then permit me to say something."He said, "Yes, say it."So Muhammad came to Kaab and said, "This man has demanded charity from us and has caused us hardship."Kaab replied, "And by Allah, you will grow even more weary of him."Muhammad said, "We have followed him, and we are reluctant to abandon him until we see how his affair turns out. We would like you to lend us a wasq or two of food."Kaab said, "What will you pledge to me as security?"Muhammad said, "What do you want from us?"Kaab said, "Your women."They said, "Glory be to Allah! You are the most handsome of the Arabs. Should we pledge our women to you, when that would bring shame upon us?"He said, "Then pledge your sons to me."They said, "Glory be to Allah! The son of one of us would be insulted, and people would say, 'He was pledged for a wasq or two.' But we will pledge our weapons to you," meaning their arms.He said, "Very well."When Muhammad came to him, he called out to him, and Kaab came out to him perfumed, his head dripping with scent. He had brought three or four men along with him. When he sat down with him, they mentioned to him what they had come for.Kaab said, "I have so-and-so with me, and she is the most fragrant woman among the people."Muhammad said, "Will you allow me to smell?"He said, "Yes."So Muhammad put his hand into his hair and smelled it. Then he said, "May I do it again?"Kaab said, "Yes."So he put his hand into his hair, and when he had a firm grip on him, he said, "Get him!" and they struck him until they killed him.
